Be Kind to the New Girl

Greetings, Medium! I’m Dana, aka All My Little Words, a GenX writer based in the Pacific Northwest. I’m new to Medium (still trying to hit that elusive 100 followers threshold), and have been both delighted and overwhelmed by the volume and diversity of content available here. Truly, it’s a wonder, and my reader cup is overflowing.

Common wisdom (as shared on Medium) is to like/comment/follow as many writers as possible in the earlier days in order to grow your readership. Which sounds great, as I’m all about engaging with other writers. But what I’m hoping to get here are some recommendations for who I should follow.

What Kind of Recommendations? That Gets Trickier.

I’ve read niches are the key to success on this platform. And while my marketing brain knows that to be true, my writer heart can’t commit to just one topic. What can I say, I contain multitudes. I’m still working on my elevator pitch for my Medium profile, and it’s settling in on something like, “It’s a real-time memoir of an offbeat GenX word nerd navigating career, music, culture, fun, finances, food, ambition, and motherhood in the Pacific Northwest.”

In other words: I’m the opposite of niche.

I’m hoping to find other writers who share this sensibility, as well as some of my interests. You don’t have to be GenX or even writing through a generational lens, though I do find having decades of experience in the workplace and life can lead to a sort of wisdom. If you feel like you’ve perhaps gained some along the way, I’d love to read your insights.

I’ve followed several writers based on topics of interest, including personal finance, working in tech, music, feminism, and of course, learning to write — and make money — on Medium.

Today in my wanderings I found this article and laughed out loud. And no, I didn’t LOL. I literally, properly laughed, out loud to my empty house. I immediately followed its author Jenn M. Wilson (hello, if you see this!), and am looking forward to reading more of her content. Having that experience made me think, I want to (virtually) meet more writers like this one.

Hence, this call for suggestions.

So I ask you, dear writers of Medium, to share your favorite writers in the comments! Please feel free to include your own profiles as well. I’d love to connect, and if you like what you read here, I’d welcome you to follow me as well.
